A new bathroom can cost a few thousand pounds or well into five figures. The difference comes down to the size of the room, whether the layout changes, and the fittings and tiles you choose.

Typical 2026 costs

Checkatrade’s 2026 figures for the UK:

  • Basic refit: from about £1,500
  • Mid-range bathroom: around £4,500
  • High-end bathroom: £7,500 and above
  • Complex renovation taking more than 10 days: £14,000 or more

In London, labour rates and access usually push prices higher, and a complete refurbishment with new pipework, underfloor heating and full tiling typically sits at the upper end.

What affects the price

  • Moving the toilet, bath or shower, which means new waste routes
  • Walk-in showers and wet rooms, which need full waterproofing
  • Tiles: the price per square metre and the area being tiled
  • Sanitaryware, taps and shower valves
  • Underfloor heating, towel rails and lighting
  • Repairs to floors and walls found once the old bathroom is removed

Labour and time

Checkatrade puts bathroom labour at roughly £320 to £480 per day, with most renovations taking 5 to 10 working days. Electrical work in a bathroom must be carried out by a registered electrician under Part P of the Building Regulations.

Common questions

Is £10,000 enough for a new bathroom?

For most family bathrooms, yes, unless the layout changes significantly or you choose high-end tiles and fittings.

Is it cheaper to keep the same layout?

Usually. Keeping the toilet, bath and basin in the same places avoids new waste routes and floor work, which are some of the biggest costs.
